Great Silk Road Adventure

On 8th April 2018 I set off on my Great Silk Road Adventure from Beijing to Istanbul. I travelled with eight travel-mad strangers for 7 weeks. Originally all of us were going to visit six countries (China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey) but I was informed that my application for a formal letter of invitation from the Iranian authorities has been rejected and therefore getting a visa to travel in Iran is impossible. I therefore left my fellow travellers near  the Turkmenistan/Iran border and travelled instead  to Azerbaijan and Georgia, rejoining the group near the Iran/Turkey border.

Financial Governance:

Financial Governance: a gentle guide for the non-financial charity trustee

Generously sponsored by Rathbones, it was launched in June 2017

When there are finance specialists on the board, a finance committee and a treasurer, why do all trustees have to engage in financial matters? The short answer is that trustees are required to do so. High-profile cases such as Kids Company show what can happen when trustees do not.
Many trustees feel that they do not know enough about finance generally, and charity finance in particular, to fulfil their responsibility for sound financial governance. This gentle guide is for the trustee who is not strong on finance. It covers the basics of financial governance based on my own experiences of serving on boards for over 30 years and on subsequent study and research.

It is written on two levels
1. Basics in brief
2. Basics in greater detail

Readers only need to dip into a specific section of level 2 when they feel they need to do so. For example, if they know that at the next board meeting the budget is being considered.

dorothy DALTON governance: a new website

dorothyDALTONgovernance is pleased to launch a new website. “I wanted something more up to date” said Dorothy, “my first website was fine when it was first built, but that was many years ago and the internet has moved on. I needed something that looked a bit more professional, more mobile friendly and would be easy for me to update”

Dorothy approached Glasgow based web development company OTS Internet Ltd to undertake the development work. MD Stefan Cent was happy to take up the challenge. “We used WordPress to build a new website for Dorothy, it’s what we do. It’s very felxible platform and incredibly well supported. The new site is mobile responsive and is better place to showcase the work that Dorothy undertakes.”
